Natasha MacDonald

I’ve joined the Beall lab to carry out my PhD research project looking at the pharmacology of metformin in the brain as well as the role of metformin and AMPK in the maintenance of blood-brain barrier and blood-CSF barrier integrity.

Before coming to Exeter, I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen, gaining my bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Biochemistry with First Class Honours, coming top of my class. My Honours Project was carried out in the lab of Dr Nimesh Mody in the Institute of Medical Sciences, Aberdeen. For this project I was looking at the effects of fatty acids and LXR agonists on the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism and fatty liver disease. This project triggered an interest in metabolic disease and endocrinology, which I am glad to be able to pursue further through this PhD project.

Outside of the lab, I enjoy a range of activities such as weightlifting, swimming, running, hiking, and reading. I love getting outside and exploring.
