Maisie Payne

I’m currently completing my professional training year as part of my BSc in Medical Sciences at the University of Exeter with Dr Craig Beall. My project involves using CRISPR to create a cell line with mutations in the KCNJ11 gene which cause neonatal diabetes and the more severe disorder called DEND syndrome. I’m also using existing and experimental drugs to investigate their use in the inhibition of KATP channels as mutations in the KCNJ11 gene result in KATP channel disfunction.

I’m excited for this opportunity to get experience within a lab setting that will help me for my potential future career in research.

Outside of the lab I love going to concerts and theatre shows, some of my favourites include seeing Taylor Swift and Mamma Mia. I also enjoy travelling and exploring new places.
